Bangladesh National Botanical Garden and Bangladesh National Herbarium were established in 1961 covering an area of about 210 acres of flora and fauna. It is the country's largest plant conservation center located next to Dhaka Zoo in Mirpur-2 of capital Dhaka. It is a knowledge center for nature lovers and botanists. National Botanic Garden as a tourist place has become a center of entertainment for children, teenagers and all ages including Dhaka city school-college-university students. Especially, everyone rushes to the National Botanical Garden to get pure oxygen for some time from the hustle and bustle, noise pollution and polluted air of mega city Dhaka.
The National Botanical Garden is a favorite place for all as one of the means of education and entertainment adjacent to the Dhaka Zoo. Teachers and students involved in the study of botany visit the National Botanical Garden for familiarization with plants and collection of specimens. Located in Dhaka's Wari area, Baldha Garden is administratively part of the National Park. The collection of plant and tree species is huge here. The park has about 56,000 different species of plants including a large collection of aquatic plants. Rare and exotic plant species are also found here. Examples include Anthurium, Dambia, Victoria Amazonica, African tulip tree, Sambucus, white Chandan wood. The National Botanical Garden is managed by the Forest Department under the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of Bangladesh.
A tissue culture laboratory has been set up at the National Botanical Garden. Tissue culture of orchids and various rare species has been adopted here. Moreover, artificial waterfall, huge rose garden, clock deck, crisscrossing lake, bridge over lake, above all winter birds are the main attractions of this national park.
For the purpose of visiting the National Botanical Garden, any tourist from outside Dhaka or foreign tourists can spend the night in any hotel around the garden. Good quality hotels are available near Mirpur-1 at low rent. This park can be easily visited from any part of Bangladesh.
